Social Documentary Photography, with Becky Duncan of Open Aye

The genre of “social documentary” is a broad one, encompassing many styles, objectives and histories. For this series of 5 in-person Advanced Skills workshops, we will consider social documentary photography as ethical and issue-based visual storytelling.  Each session will involve display and dialogue around inspirational images, practical How To tips and some hands on activities, to share skills.

About Becky Duncan:

Becky is the founder and manager of Open Aye, a community interest company, using photography and participatory photo projects to document, celebrate and strengthen Scottish communities. Established in 2010, Open Aye has worked with many charities, social enterprises, community groups and funders.

As part of the social enterprise remit, 1/3 of all photo projects are for the benefit of people with refugee or migrant backgrounds.

Becky is a documentary photographer and socially engaged arts practitioner. Half of her time is spent taking photos for clients, and half is spent facilitating participatory arts projects for communities. She has a BA Hons in Film & Media, from Stirling Uni (in the ‘90s), a PDA in Digital Imaging, from Glasgow City College (in the 2000s) and is currently finishing an MA in Art & Social Practice from the University of Highlands & Islands. She is based in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, but works across Scotland, seeking out impacts, great views and nice folk.
