Join Josh and Axel for an informal and entertaining talk about the forming of their collaborative practice, their research into the semiotics of greenwashing specifically regarding their recent action at the Shell PLC shareholders conference in 2024 which is the focus of the artwork Filibuster. Josh and Axel will talk about their unconventional use of technology, specifically live streaming technology as seen in the work LIVE @ White Cart Water.

Since 2018, Josh Wirz and Axel Berger have developed a portfolio of six time-based works that explore themes of environmentalism, infrastructure, and the urban landscape. Their primary media, performance and video, are tailored to be site-specific, and they are passionate about presenting works in unique spaces. They harness theatrical techniques such as contact improvisation and clowning coupled with a unique use of media equipment and custom software to create compelling work that they co-write, co-direct and co-perform in.
Their work ‘Plug Fair / Through a glass, darkly,’ has been exhibited at international events such as the Public Immersion conference at the Inter Arts Center in Malmö, the Lahti Fringe Festival in Finland, and the Stockholm Fringe Festival, where it was awarded the ‘Most Innovative in Performance’ award.
They have exhibited works such as ‘Two People Frowning at a Salami’ performed at the Chalten Gallery, ‘The Accumulative Worth of an Apple’ presented at Elmer Art Space, and ’10 Ideas’ performed at Bloomsbury Theatre. ‘If Civilisation’, an interdisciplinary performance unveiled at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, reimagines the urban landscape through the lens of the human body, proposing its integration into civil infrastructure. Lastly, ‘Filibuster’, a critical examination of greenwashing tactics, was developed during a funded residency at the Performance Art Forum.
Critics have characterised their work as ‘an intense, slightly worrying and very beautiful experience’, and a ‘much-deserved morbid curiosity’.
