Artist In Residence – Kinect Sensor

Taking the opportunity in the final week before Christmas to dust off the Xbox Kinect sensor — it had been sitting forgotten at the back of the cupboard for far too long…

The Kinect captures motion data using an infrared sensor and has the ability to act as a tracking model by identifying key nodes in the body, such as joints and limbs. I believe it can also be triggered by specific gestures…

I struggled to get it working on my MacBook, but it worked much better on my old Windows machine where support for it is native. I had the idea of particles shooting out from my fingers — imagining how fun this could be in a club setting. You could take a live feed from the crowd or an onstage dancer and feed it directly into visuals for a DJ set.

I started thinking about how I could use this for the exhibition in March. Perhaps people could send particles out from their fingertips that land on the ground and sprout into flowers or words ? Definitely potential of combining body movement with visual interaction.
