DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of projection mapping with digital artist (and Refractive’s Artist in Residence) Jamie Wardrop.\n  \nWednesday 18th September\, 7-9pm at Refractive Production Hub (Paisley).\n  \nIn this practical workshop Jamie Wardrop will introduce the principles and basics of design using projection mapping.  He will look at how to prepare and select digital media content\, how to use the core tools of the software and have fun making your own compositions with found materials in the room. In  future workshops\, Jamie will follow up with a more in-depth look into the techniques of live mixing or vjing and content creation. DESCRIPTION:If you don’t have a screenplay yet these sessions will give you the tools to assist you in getting your vision onto the page. If you already have written a script these sessions will help to make sure it’s the best version you can deliver\, and how to get it into the world.\nA series of 6 monthly scriptwriting sessions hosted by Simon McCallum. Monthly on Thursdays 7-9.30pm at Refractive Production Hub\, 3rd Floor Witherspoon Building\, Storie Street\, Paisley PA1 2AR. \n  \nWHAT WE WILL COVER IN THESE SIX SESSIONS \nHow to use intention and obstacle to create exciting scenes.  The importance of the first ten pages of your screenplay.  What is it like working in continuing drama?  How do you collaborate with Producers and Script editors to create a good script? How to receive notes properly that will help improve your script.  How to pitch your project and what you need to do in general meetings.  Most importantly how to create a good spec script that can be used as your calling card for agents\, producers\, and film and TV companies. Throughout the sessions you will be doing short practical writing exercises. \n(Please note: fluency in English is required for this course) \n  \n ABOUT THE TUTOR – SIMON McCALLUM \n Simon’s first play ‘Shadowboxing’ was nominated for Meyer Whitworth award\, second play ‘Timewatching’ was shortlisted for Verity Bargate award.  He was selected for the Royal Court/BBC Writers room ‘50 scheme’ The Traverse Emerging Writers project and Channel 4’s Pilot Scheme. He has been commissioned by Dundee Rep\, Oran Mor\, Raindog and Birds of Paradise and written plays for Radio 4 and Radio Scotland. He began working on the continuing drama River City in 2020 and has written several episodes.  He has two feature films in development The Gorbals Postie and The Falkirk Cowboys\, which he originally produced as a documentary for BBC Scotland.  The short film he adapted Caught in this moment of Time is out later this year. Simon has run workshops for The Playwrights Studio\, for young writers in Ayrshire and a single mother’s group in Falkirk\, he currently teaches screenwriting for the BSL course at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. \n  \nMonth one – 12th Sept:  What makes a good story? Since then\, Mia: A Rapture 2.0 Production has been distributed by North American company Meridian Releasing Group and can be purchased on Amazon. Gary’s most recent project The Defender (currently in Production) ranks in the top 30% in coverfly\, was one of 6 semi-finalists at FILM MARKET HUB\, scored 7.5/10 on SCREENCRAFT and was a quarter finalist . \n\nFINAL WORDS\nThis will serve as a fantastic platform to jump-start screenwriting careers for people who have had no formal education or experience in the field. This is a feature length concept film aimed at making cinema accessible on an equal platform for those who are blind or partially sighted. Dark Soul is not a conventional film – it is screenplay narrated (not audio descripted) and sighted people are invited to wear an eye mask in the cinema for the duration of the action (opening and end credits are laid to picture). We recently had a private test screening with an audience made up primarily of visually impaired people – and guide dogs! It worked brilliantly. The feedback from the visually impaired attendees made a powerful case to do more Films for the Ears Event Cinema screenings aka “Dark Screenings”\, in order for those who experience sight loss to enjoy the film collectively and be part of a cinema going community. Refreshments provided. \nAbout the Artist in Residence Programme:\nPaisley re – invented in digital art\, soundscape and projection. \nJune 2024 to March 2025 \n  \nJamie Wardrop will be based within the Refractive Collective at the Witherspoon Building\, Storie Street\, Paisley for the next 10 months. There he will establish an open studio where he will examine different methods of visual creation. \nWith an eye on the roots of the town and keen awareness of the need for radical imagination\, he will use the opportunity to breach the question of how we face up to the rapid changes in environment brought on by climate breakdown. \nRenfrewshire Film and Digital artists will be able to work with Jamie through various workshops and exploration sessions to develop an innovative projection mapping and sound experience exhibition planned for the town centre in March 2025. \nJamie Wardrop is a digital artist\, technologist and designer who has worked across the creative industries in Scotland and beyond over the past twenty years. With origins in projection mapping\, 3d art\, immersive experiences and film he is interested in how digital art can be used for direct expression and a deeper understanding of our place in a connected ecological whole.

See more details about this event here. \n \nMammary Mountain is an intimate immersive virtual reality(VR) experience that explores dis-ease within the body during breast cancer and the body’s relationship to the broader context of the land. This new immersive experience tells the stories of patients’ and survivors’ healthcare struggles\, and the hidden experiences of breast cancer treatment. \nIt tells the lesser told stories not only of survival\, but of trauma from the life changing experience of (Breast) Cancer through a haptic garment\, so audience members/ visitors can feel vibration in the area of the lymph nodes where breast cancer grows. This work is not only for breast cancer patients and survivors but more so for family\, friends and those with no experience of cancer in their own lives to have more empathy and care for those who do around them. \nThe piece is explored through the illustrations\, poetry\, personal story\, and field recordings of Tara Baoth Mooney\, along with the personal stories of 8 participants who have gone through various treatments for cancer  themselves. \nThese recorded sounds and drawings have been merged with the strong visual 3D landscape and evocative animation created by Maf’j Alvarez through VR and embodied through a garment\, which vibrates in areas of the body affected by pain or discomfort. \nThe narrative framework and content development\, project ideation and story editing\, grant writing\, community outreach and development\, workshop development\, staging\, and promotion\, as well as overall project production\, has been done by Camille Baker. \nThe artists hope this work ignites new public engagement\, ultimately resulting in a more nuanced and holistic understanding and empathy of the breast cancer treatment experience.  \n  \nExperience \nAudiences are invited to bear witness to the journey of the breast cancer experience\, as narrated by survivors and patients. Within the world of Mammary Mountain\, participants navigate a space that straddles perceptions of dream-like and reality. Multiple treatments\,  and their affects and effects on the mind and body are told through various voices and their unique perspectives and path. \nThe experience is performative\, Mammary Mountain is a unique experience set in a doctor’s surgery or clinic. As ‘patients’\, the visitors wear a Mammography Gown and then a special vibration garment on top and VR headset\, sitting in a bespoke chair to experience this intimate experience. The narrative is then embodied through a haptic garment\, which vibrates in areas of the body affected by pain or discomfort mapped to the breast lymph nodes of the chest\, underarm and back. \nMammary Mountain is crafted from multiple elements. The landscape of County Sligo in Ireland’s North West\, where Mooney spent her time in recovery\, the sounds of the machines juxtaposed with the everyday sounds of her footsteps\, including the steps from the bed in her room to the radiotherapy department\, recording the machines inside the environs\, the sea\, birds and water outside through her illustrations\, the stylised 3D aesthetic created for them by Maf’j Alvarez for VR\, the voices of other survivors collected and incorporated into the narrative design of Camille Baker. \nThis is embodied through a haptic garment co-designed by Sophie Skach and Mooney which  responds through vibrations that are triggered by the story elements. The electronic engineering is designed by Paul Hayes. She felt she had an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment\, and that documentary photography could highlight and challenge the social disadvantages that she herself had suffered. SUMMARY:Four Track Nights: Experimental Sounds workshops
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in making electronic experimental music and want to take it further? Do you have an interest in experimental music or want to expand your current audio knowledge and abilities? \nThe workshops will cover experimental sound\, field recording and some topical information on the genre. We will help you getting started taking your first steps in creating experimental sounds and we will look at DIY instruments and mic building techniques. These workshops are suitable for complete beginners or experienced musicians. \nYou will be able to get a better understanding of modular synthesisers and immersive audio techniques as well as meeting other like minded individuals and help grow a community of local experimental audio artists. \n\nThe workshops will run on the 3rd Saturday of the month on the following dates: Saturday 16th March\, Saturday 20th April\, Saturday 18th May 2024.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe workshops will all be 11am – 2pm at Refractive Production Hub\, 3rd Floor Witherspoon Building\, Storie St\, Paisley\, PA1 2AR.\n\n\n\n\n\nEach session costs £5\, it is expected that participants attend the sessions as a series (individual sessions can not be booked).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo book a slot\, please email Muriel Ann at  refractivecollective@gmail.com\n  \nSESSION ONE: Introduction to experimentation \nThis session will introduce the genre\, some examples of 4TN guest experimentalists\, venues and opportunities where you can show off your work and some of the tools or equipment that you can use to get started. We will work with miRack and Garageband and set these up on your iPad. Attendees are welcome to bring their own computer/mobile device and should consider bringing their own wired headphones to each session \nSESSION TWO: Making microphones  \nThis session will have attendees construct their own microphone or hydrophone. From this we can then connect these to DIY instruments or make field recordings. We will then use these samples to make strange and experimental noises with a view to creating your own sound art. \nSESSION THREE: All about tape \nIn this session we will look at the application of analogue recordings to our soundscape. Through investigating tape loops the attendees will learn how to make their own loop tape and use it to create chaotic\, ambient drones.

Refreshments provided.\n\n\n\nA note about NEoN Digital Arts and Donna Holford-Lovell:\nNEoN Digital Arts (SCIO) is a small charity based in Dundee. In recognising the profound connection between contemporary culture and digital technology\, NEoN believes in addressing digital poverty and promoting digital detox as integral aspects of its mission. Through a collaborative programme\, NEoN seeks to not only enhance critical understanding but also make digital art more accessible\, acknowledging the impact of technology on society today. \n\nDIRECTOR – Donna Holford-Lovell \nDonna has been with NEoN since its conception in 2009. She is a passionate advocate of digital (social) change\, working with digital art makers to change the binary systems which parallel the heteronormative structures of the patriarchy. She champions digital art practices that aim to be nonhierarchical and inclusive and use tools to bypass this patriarchy. Under the umbrella of new digital change feminisms\, many artists are changing the technology paradigms\, metaphorically and literally rewriting the code. It is here that she works and makes a difference. “After years of conformity\, I am now dreaming in the ruins of Big Tech”. \n  \n\nA note about Kevin Cameron: \nKevin Cameron is a filmmaker\, animator and artist with a particular focus on documentary and participative work. He graduated from Glasgow University’s Department of Film and Television Studies and The University of Bristol’s postgrad in Film production. With a wide ranging practice\, he has produced award winning work for BBC\, Scottish TV and Canal Plus in France and delivered  commissions for bodies such as Creative Scotland\, Education Scotland\, Screen Scotland and the Freedom of Information Commissioner. Kevin had a long running collaboration with writer and artist Alasdair Gray producing a number of shorts and the feature length documentary Alasdair Gray\, A Life in Progress which screened extensively at festivals and twice on the BBC.   \nKevin has a long standing interest and practice in collaborative and participative filmmaking and has worked in multiple contexts and with diverse members of the community. Highlights of this strand of his practice have included presenting work for the directors programme of the GI festival and presenting in the Carnegie Hall in New York as part of International Conference of Teaching Artists. Kevin has also worked extensively in formal education with young people and teaching staff and received a high commendation from Queen Margaret University’s course in Professional Practice in Film Education.    \nLochwinnoch based\, Kevin has firm local links\, recently presenting work at the Cycle Arts Festival as well as delivering a time capsule of Paisley Town Hall. Amongst others\, Kevin has been pleased to work alongside: Pachedu\, ReMode\, PACE\, Create and the TH.CARS2 programme.   \n

We work with artists and communities across local\, national and international contexts\, using film as a way to come together\, have conversations and strengthen community.\nWe deliver the UK’s festival of experimental film and artists’ moving image; an award-winning programme of community filmmaking\, skills development and creative learning; and Scotland’s only film-specific residencies programme\, supporting the generation of new knowledge through long-form\, practice-led research and multidisciplinary partnerships.\nWe are constantly questioning the broader contexts in which we live and work. Through collaboration and a critically engaged practice that places inclusion\, equity and social justice at its centre\, we aim to put Hawick on the map as Scotland’s Film Town\, and contribute to a fairer creative industry.\nOur team takes pride in the care and clarity with which we deliver our work\, and in the warmth and hospitality for which we are known. Currently based in Paisley\, Chris’s main arts practice focuses on technology applied to video and sonic performance and immersive installations. \nKeny Drew – Tape Loops\n1 part of the dynamic experimental sound and installation duo JAMP. Keny Drew a Former Paisley resident and now Crail based glass artist and musician\, creates works using modular synths\, acoustic samples and 4 track tape loops. As part of JAMP Keny creates unique immersive soundscapes paired with visual performances. \nFraser Rowan – Modular Demystified\nFraser Rowan is a Glasgow based producer performing\, writing and recording music under the name Ty Lumnus. For many years his instrument of choice was guitar\, working in collaboration with other musicians. After a short time working with an electronic artist his eyes were opened to a new way of creating music which enabled an artist to write\, record and perform music without the requirement of other musicians. At this stage he adopted Ableton and a laptop into his workflow and found that his output rapidly accelerated. Always preferring to work out of the box\, Fraser had collected a number of hardware synths\, however they never felt like the natural instrument of choice. After feeling more of an affinity towards the flexibility of semi modular synths\, Fraser took the plunge into a fully modular system that he has been building for >6 years.

Gary directed multi award winning film ‘Mia: A Rapture 2.0 Production’. The film won over 10 awards including Best British Film\, Best Film and the IAC Diamond Award at BIAFF. Since then\, Mia: A Rapture 2.0 Production has been distributed by North American company Meridian Releasing Group and can be purchased on Amazon. Gary’s most recent project The Defender (currently in Production) ranks in the top 30% in coverfly\, was one of 6 semi-finalists at FILM MARKET HUB\, scored 7.5/10 on SCREENCRAFT and was a quarter finalist . \nFINAL WORDS\nThis will serve as a fantastic platform to jump-start screenwriting careers for people who have had no formal education or experience in the field.
