During the pandemic\, she trained in stop motion at Aardman Academy\, and soon after created The Jubilee — a stunning blend of live action and stop motion\, supported by Screen Scotland and BFI Network. The Jubilee was nominated for the Thelma Schoonmaker Prize for Short Filmmaking Excellence at EIFF 2024. \nWilma is also a recent participant in the Netflix-funded Women in Film & TV Four Nations Mentoring Scheme 2025 and a mum of two daughters. \nJoin us on 6th June for an inspiring evening with Wilma at the Refractive Production Hub\, Paisley\, from 7–9:30PM. SUMMARY:Industry Session : Greening your Film and Digital Practice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first of our Refractive Industry Sessions: Wednesday 2nd April 2025 at 1.30pm. \n  \n  \nDiscover practical ways to make your film and digital work more sustainable.\nOur speakers for the afternoon session are Dan Bernard of Fast Familiar (Digital Story Studio) and Sarah Hamilton recently appointed Screen Sustainability Consultant\, at Climate for Culture in Scotland who will talk about operating BAFTA Albert in Film Production (Bafta Albert is the official sustainability initiative for the Film and TV Industry). \n  \nIn recent years artists\, galleries cultural institutions have become increasingly interested in digital engagement and this was rapidly accelerated by the COVID 19 pandemic. At the same time\, the cultural sector has become increasingly motivated to take action in response to the climate crisis. However\, too little attention has been paid to the environmental impact of digital cultural production\, perhaps because these impacts often seem to be invisible or to take place in another part of the world. In this talk we will explore the environmental impact of digital activities and discover a series of strategies that artists and cultural organisations can adopt to reduce their digital environmental impact. \n  \nDan Bernard’s  talk will draw on a series of case study interviews with artists that Fast Familiar\, Abandon Normal Devices and Arts Catalyst did as part of their project The Networked Condition\, which was supported by Julies Bicycle and Arts Council England. It will also discuss the ways in which Fast Familiar have attempted to lower the impact of their own artistic practice and the tools they have created to help others do the same\, which include a tool to measure the carbon footprint of digital cultural production and a free tool to help artists and small cultural organisations build low carbon websites.  The talk will also discuss the environmental impact that AI and cryptocurrency are having and consider what\, if anything\, artists can do about it. \nSara Hamilton will talk about the practicalities of Bafta Albert and the methodologies they offer: \n\nWant to make greener productions but don’t know where to begin? The Bafta Production Handbook is full of tips\, advice and case studies from your peers to help you make sustainable changes to the way you work. Imagine walking on to location\, silent except the sound of the crew. Imagine walking into the studio\, lights ablaze but air fresh and cool. Imagine sitting in the production office\, safe in the knowledge that the only impact of the activity co-ordinated is cultural. Imagine it\, because it’s where we are heading – powered by the wind and the rays of the sun.\nClimate content – The screen industries have a crucial role to play in solving climate change. Reducing the footprint of productions is important. But\, by far\, the greatest opportunity to make an impact is through the content we put on screen.\n\nAbout Dan Bernard\nImage Dan Bernard\n  \nDan Barnard is joint lead artist of Digital Story Studio Fast Familiar and a doctoral researcher in the Informatics Department at the University of Sussex. He is a member of the Association for Research in Interactive Digital Narratives (ARDIN). \nFast Familiar collaborated with Abandon Normal Devices and Arts Catalyst on The Networked Condition\, a Julies Bicycle/Arts Council England Accellerator project which explored the environmental impact of digital cultural production through a series of artistic experiments\, case study interviews and the creation of a carbon measuring tool focused on the digital elements of artistic projects. Fast Familiar have also created a tool to help artists build low carbon websites. \nFast Familiar’s recent work includes Looking for Love\, which premiered at Science Gallery London as part of their: AI: Who’s Looking After Me? Exhibition The Acquisitions Panel\, which received a Jury Special mention at Sheffield Doc Fest 2022 and won the Activist Museum Award\, Do What You Must\, which was selected to be part of the Official Cultural Programme at COP26 and The Evidence Chamber\, which was described by the New York Times as “an especially successful way for theater to be enjoyed via a laptop.” \nFor a decade from 2014 to 2024\, Dan was a Senior Lecturer at London South Bank University\, where he taught Multimedia Performance and led the Digital Performance research group. \n

Andrea Arnold \n2024 – 118 mins – UK\, US\, France and Germany – Language: English \n  \nFrom Academy Award-winner Andrea Arnold (American Honey\, Fish Tank)\, BIRD is a tender\, striking and extraordinarily surprising coming-of-age fable about marginalised life in the fringes of contemporary society. 12-year-old Bailey lives with her devoted but chaotic single dad Bug (Barry Keoghan\, Saltburn) and wayward brother Hunter in a squat in Gravesend\, north Kent. Approaching puberty and seeking attention and adventure\, Bailey’s fractured home life is transformed when she encounters Bird\, a mysterious stranger on a journey of his own. A wondrous portrait of the transition from childhood to adolescence that remains grounded in empathetic social realism. \n\n  \nAndrea Arnold’s tender contemporary fable…Newcomer Nykiya Adams triumphs in this otherworldly kitchen sink story of a young girl who forms a bond with a peculiar stranger. \n-BFI \n  \nThis latest film from renowned English filmmaker Andrea Arnold is a compelling\, ultimately joyous story that tackles themes of identity\, sexism\, loneliness\, and class struggle. The director’s empathy and skill at showing us beauty despite dire circumstances elevates Bird beyond its roots. Add to that a crystalline thread of magic realism and the result is an ode to the wondrous transition from childhood to adolescence. \n-TIFF \n  \n\n\n  \n\nWe have created a ticket system which allows attendees to pay according to their means and financial situation. Kevin Cameron – re-edit with new material \n2024 – 1hr 34 mins – UK – Language: English \n  \nAlasdair Gray is one of the giants of Scottish Arts. He is the author of Lanark (hailed as the most influential Scottish novel of the second half of the 20th century)\, painter of one of Scotland’s biggest pieces of public art of the 21st century (the beautiful hand-painted ceiling of Oran Mor in Glasgow) and author of Poor Things\, now adapted into a film starring Emma Stone. In this intimate portrait\, filmed over the course of 15 years\, he has allowed himself to be filmed creating work that has become part of the living heritage of Scotland. \n\n  \nThe films of Kevin Cameron are a rare opportunity to view the artist not as the monumental figure of university tutorials or a name on the walls of famous buildings\, but as a living and working artist. Cameron’s film places Gray within the context of a world in which he is renowned\, but also explores the reality of his life in the city that provides his greatest inspiration. \n–The Skinny \n  \n\n\nWe have created a ticket system which allows attendees to pay according to their means and financial situation. Gary Lennon and Ollie Alin \n2023 – 80 mins – Ireland\, UK – Language: English \n  \nI Dream in Photos (Best Original Score at the Camille Awards) explores the life and work of Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Cathal McNaughton\, who quit “the best job in the world” at the peak of his career aged just 40. Cathal is in deep reflection\, following his courageous work in the field of some of the world’s most harrowing trouble spots. His obsession with his art\, drove him away from his family and son. Now\, as he rebuilds personal relationships\, he is challenged by the demons of his past. \n\nMcNaughton is an amiable and thoughtful subject\, and his testimony even as he recounts experiences in conflict zones is clear-headed and stoical. The film\, appropriately\, is beautifully shot. Pretty vistas of hills and fields create a contemplative space in tandem with McNaughton’s own introspection. \n–The Irish Times \n  \nI Dream In Photos delivers not only a well observed documentary and wonderful homage to Cathal’s impressive career – but also a quiet insight into the conflicted human condition. \n–Film Ireland \n  \n\n\nShort film screening: Roll Down the Window (2024) \n10 mins\, Person\, Short\, Dir: Lipa Hussain. \nFilmmaker Lipa Hussain interrogates a neurological condition she has experienced since childhood and the parallels it represents with her own religious and racial struggles. Alice In Wonderland syndrome causes the sensation of shrinking and losing bodily control. The film explores the idea of utilising AIW to confront an enemy from Lipa’s past.  \n\n\nWe have created a ticket system which allows attendees to pay according to their means and financial situation. This is a feature length concept film aimed at making cinema accessible on an equal platform for those who are blind or partially sighted. Dark Soul is not a conventional film – it is screenplay narrated (not audio descripted) and sighted people are invited to wear an eye mask in the cinema for the duration of the action (opening and end credits are laid to picture). We recently had a private test screening with an audience made up primarily of visually impaired people – and guide dogs! It worked brilliantly. The feedback from the visually impaired attendees made a powerful case to do more Films for the Ears Event Cinema screenings aka “Dark Screenings”\, in order for those who experience sight loss to enjoy the film collectively and be part of a cinema going community. Dark Soul is a real opportunity for cinemas and festivals to make a bold statement about making cinema more inclusive for specific marginalised groups – like the blind and visually impaired community. Dark Soul is the chance to do it first! \n  \n[Please note\, Refractive have classified this film as a 15. As such\, it is advised that people under 15 should not book a ticket to see this film.] \nFeature length concept film | Refractive classification 15 \nDIRECTOR: Zoë HunterWRITER: Ros BorlandCOUNTRY OF ORIGIN: United Kingdom  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nSynopsis: Edinburgh\, Scotland.
