DESCRIPTION:Join Refractive for an evening with Artist\, Animator and Director Daniel Gough as part of the Paisley Docs: Rebels and Innovators programme. The Artist Meet up will take place on Saturday 20th of December at the Refractive Hub\, 7-9.30pm.  \nWe are delighted to welcome Daniel Gough\, a talented Artist and Director\, to be the guest speaker at our next Artist Meet Up. Daniel will be chatting about his experience of using animation in documentary filmmaking\, and his experience of getting his first feature length documentary completed. The evening is part of the Paisley Docs: Rebels and Innovators programme\, and will be an opportunity to meet with other artists working in Renfrewshire\, and of course enjoy some light refreshments too! \nDaniel Gough is a Welsh born Artist & Director based in Edinburgh work specializes in creative\, deeply personal storytelling as a means to explore difficult and sensitive subjects. His first documentary short ‘The Waiting Room’ was picked up by Sonja Henrici creates and is now in active development as a hybrid animation/documentary feature film named ‘Night Gardener’ where a doctor’s son tries to put his father & his broken heart back together again by re-animating the strange but very real fairy tales he would tell him as a child. The Masterclass will take place at the Refractive Hub in the UWS Witherspoon Building (Paisley) on Saturday 11th October\, 1-3pm. This event will be followed by a screening of Luke and co-director Corin Sworn’s film On Weaving at Johnstone Textile Space\, 5pm (doors from 4.30pm).\nLUKE FOWLER (b. 1978\, Glasgow) is a filmmaker\, photographer\, and digital artist who lives and works in Glasgow. His work questions the style and political implications of conventional modes of documentary through a varied practice which encompasses film\, sound\, installation and photography. He is concerned with finding new ways to meaningfully engage with marginal cultural figures\, spaces and archive materials through the medium of 16mm film. His moving image works have charted an alternative history of Britain as well as considering significant international musicians and artists – revisiting the work of Margaret Tait\, R. D. Laing\, Patrick Cowley\, and Brunhild Ferrari\, amongst others. \nHe was nominated for The Turner Prize in 2012 and received the inaugural Derek Jarman Award in 2008. In 2014\, Fowler was one of the recipients of Artists and Archives: Artists’ Moving Image\, a unique residency programme based at BBC Scotland. In 2014\, MACK published Fowler’s first monograph of his photo archive. Fowler has exhibited and shown his films internationally. His film Mum’s Cards was awarded the 2019 Scottish Short Film Award at Glasgow Short Film Festival and the prize for Best Short at Punto de Vista International Documentary Film Festival of Navarre\, Spain. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nExciting Guest at Our Next Artist Meet Up – Wilma Smith!\n  \nWe’re delighted to welcome Wilma Smith\, a brilliant writer\, director\, and stop motion animator originally from Coatbridge\, to our next Refractive meet-up. \nWilma began making films as a teenager and went on to study at Glasgow School of Art. She started on 16mm film before moving into digital\, co-directing several zero-budget features that screened internationally — including Four Eyes and My Life as a Bus Stop\, both nominated for the Michael Powell Award at Edinburgh International Film Festival. \nHer first commission came with The Review (2016) through the Scottish Documentary Institute’s Bridging the Gap scheme. During the pandemic\, she trained in stop motion at Aardman Academy\, and soon after created The Jubilee — a stunning blend of live action and stop motion\, supported by Screen Scotland and BFI Network. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first of our Refractive Industry Sessions: Wednesday 2nd April 2025 at 1.30pm. \n  \n  \nDiscover practical ways to make your film and digital work more sustainable.\nOur speakers for the afternoon session are Dan Bernard of Fast Familiar (Digital Story Studio) and Sarah Hamilton recently appointed Screen Sustainability Consultant\, at Climate for Culture in Scotland who will talk about operating BAFTA Albert in Film Production (Bafta Albert is the official sustainability initiative for the Film and TV Industry). \n  \nIn recent years artists\, galleries cultural institutions have become increasingly interested in digital engagement and this was rapidly accelerated by the COVID 19 pandemic. At the same time\, the cultural sector has become increasingly motivated to take action in response to the climate crisis. However\, too little attention has been paid to the environmental impact of digital cultural production\, perhaps because these impacts often seem to be invisible or to take place in another part of the world. In this talk we will explore the environmental impact of digital activities and discover a series of strategies that artists and cultural organisations can adopt to reduce their digital environmental impact. \n  \nDan Bernard’s  talk will draw on a series of case study interviews with artists that Fast Familiar\, Abandon Normal Devices and Arts Catalyst did as part of their project The Networked Condition\, which was supported by Julies Bicycle and Arts Council England. It will also discuss the ways in which Fast Familiar have attempted to lower the impact of their own artistic practice and the tools they have created to help others do the same\, which include a tool to measure the carbon footprint of digital cultural production and a free tool to help artists and small cultural organisations build low carbon websites.  The talk will also discuss the environmental impact that AI and cryptocurrency are having and consider what\, if anything\, artists can do about it. \nSara Hamilton will talk about the practicalities of Bafta Albert and the methodologies they offer: \n\nWant to make greener productions but don’t know where to begin? The Bafta Production Handbook is full of tips\, advice and case studies from your peers to help you make sustainable changes to the way you work. Imagine walking on to location\, silent except the sound of the crew. Imagine walking into the studio\, lights ablaze but air fresh and cool. Imagine sitting in the production office\, safe in the knowledge that the only impact of the activity co-ordinated is cultural. Imagine it\, because it’s where we are heading – powered by the wind and the rays of the sun.\nClimate content – The screen industries have a crucial role to play in solving climate change. Reducing the footprint of productions is important. But\, by far\, the greatest opportunity to make an impact is through the content we put on screen.\n\nAbout Dan Bernard\nImage Dan Bernard\n  \nDan Barnard is joint lead artist of Digital Story Studio Fast Familiar and a doctoral researcher in the Informatics Department at the University of Sussex. He is a member of the Association for Research in Interactive Digital Narratives (ARDIN). \nFast Familiar collaborated with Abandon Normal Devices and Arts Catalyst on The Networked Condition\, a Julies Bicycle/Arts Council England Accellerator project which explored the environmental impact of digital cultural production through a series of artistic experiments\, case study interviews and the creation of a carbon measuring tool focused on the digital elements of artistic projects. Fast Familiar have also created a tool to help artists build low carbon websites. \nFast Familiar’s recent work includes Looking for Love\, which premiered at Science Gallery London as part of their: AI: Who’s Looking After Me? Exhibition The Acquisitions Panel\, which received a Jury Special mention at Sheffield Doc Fest 2022 and won the Activist Museum Award\, Do What You Must\, which was selected to be part of the Official Cultural Programme at COP26 and The Evidence Chamber\, which was described by the New York Times as “an especially successful way for theater to be enjoyed via a laptop.” \nFor a decade from 2014 to 2024\, Dan was a Senior Lecturer at London South Bank University\, where he taught Multimedia Performance and led the Digital Performance research group. \n

Established in 2010\, Open Aye has worked with many charities\, social enterprises\, community groups and funders. \nAs part of the social enterprise remit\, 1/3 of all photo projects are for the benefit of people with refugee or migrant backgrounds. \nBecky is a documentary photographer and socially engaged arts practitioner. Half of her time is spent taking photos for clients\, and half is spent facilitating participatory arts projects for communities. She has a BA Hons in Film & Media\, from Stirling Uni (in the ‘90s)\, a PDA in Digital Imaging\, from Glasgow City College (in the 2000s) and is currently finishing an MA in Art & Social Practice from the University of Highlands & Islands. He studied a BA in Photography & Film Production at Napier University and holds an MSc in Animation and Visualisation from DjCAD. \nHe was one of only 7 chosen for the Scottish Documentary Institute Bridging the Gap Scheme in 2016\, and the resulting short documentary film\, Teeth\, premiered at EIFF and won Best Documentary at the Scottish Short Film Festival as well as screening at Aesthetica\, Athens International\, and Sebastopol Documentary Festival. From there he DoP’d the BBC Four short documentary Outlying and 30min Our Fathers documentary for BBC Scotland. In 2020\, he was commissioned to undertake the experimental art film titled The Soul Of A Statue focusing on the work of renowned Czech glass artist Martin Janecky for exhibition at the Toyama Glass Museum in Tokyo. DESCRIPTION:A playful participatory workshop programme focusing on performing puppets for camera with Muriel Ann Macleod. \nThese advanced skills workshops will examine specialized puppetry skills for bringing arm puppets with mechanisms to life for filming (Cinema or TV). The workshops will cover areas like puppet design\, puppet focus\, lip synch\,  puppet movement and expression\,  rods and live hands\,  improvisation\,  Puppet character development\, improvised script content and the voice of the puppet. \nParticipants will work with several practice puppet characters (practice arm puppets designed by Muriel Ann Macleod  inspired by the Henson legacy and partial marionette) to develop the individual puppets personality\, voice and movement. Techniques for performing to camera and interacting puppets with live performers for camera will be explored. These techniques carry over into animation of objects and building creature characters. The course is designed for actors and animators who have an interest in developing unique\, quirky puppet characters for screen -puppet film and animation. \nSession 1:  Saturday 25th January 2025 11am to 1.30pm \nA introduction to arm puppets how they are built and function. Hands on puppet exercises puppet focus and eyeballs. Lip synch and basic puppet movement techniques to practice. \nSession 2:  Saturday 1st February 2025 11am to 1.30pm \nPerforming to camera techniques for arm puppets\, Operating rods and live hands and  expanding the dynamic of the puppet. Creating the puppet’s individual personality and puppet interaction within the group. \nSession 3: Saturday 15th February 2025 11am to 1.30pm \nImprovisation with puppets\, developing  script content for characters. Refining techniques\, recognising focus and engagement from film clips. \nSession 4: Saturday 1st March 2025 11am to 1.30pm \nDeveloping storytelling\, puppet emotion techniques and expressions\,  developing the potential of the individual puppet\, puppeteer imagination. \nSession 5 :  Saturday 15th March 2025 11am to 1.30pm \nRefining performance to camera\, possibilities and ideas. Each participant will perform a practice puppet to camera with their own devised character performance. (Film clips will be produced for the participants). \nTutor Information: \nMuriel Ann Macleod is a theatre and film Director and Producer based in Renfrewshire.  She first trained in Puppetry with Ultimate Animates  in London through an EU funded Puppetry trans region collaboration on the  Gaelic Broadcast programme Mire Mara in the 1990s. Since then she has run her own puppet design company Geas in the Outer Hebrides where she produced film & theatre puppets and creature builds with willow and papier mache techniques for various film\, theatre and Island Carnival events between 2000 and  2018\, including the Nomadic Carnival for Change project with Teatermaskinen in rural Sweden in 2017.  Current puppet builds include a series of unique Hebridean puppet characters for a new short film project.  The arm puppets used in the workshops were designed and built by Muriel Ann for practice and character development.
