SUMMARY:Dark Soul (A Film for the Ears) - Thursday 11th July - The Bungalow
DESCRIPTION:Screening on Thursday 11th July at The Bungalow (Paisley) as part of our Spring Film Exhibition programme. \nJoin Refractive for a screening of award winning feature length concept film\, Dark Soul: A Film for the Ears\, directed by Zoe Hunter and written by Ros Borland\, at The Bungalow\, Paisley. Alongside the screening\, we are excited to present a post-screening Q&A with the director and writer\, Zoë Hunter and Ros Borland! The screening will take place on Thursday 11th July\, book a ticket for only £5 below. \nDoors open 7pm\,  film screening 7.15 pm. \nThis event is in partnership with RNIB Scotland. Guide dogs are welcome. If you have any questions about the accessibility of this screening\, please email or phone Muriel Ann Macleod\, Refractive Innovation Producer – murielann@refractive.scot or 07789117740. \n  \nFor more film information\, please see below. \n  \nCeltic Media Festival Torc Award winner for excellence\, supernatural thriller Dark Soul (A film for the Ears) in association with the Royal National Institute of Blind People Scotland\, is directed by Zoë Hunter and written by Ros Borland. This is a feature length concept film aimed at making cinema accessible on an equal platform for those who are blind or partially sighted. Dark Soul is not a conventional film – it is screenplay narrated (not audio descripted) and sighted people are invited to wear an eye mask in the cinema for the duration of the action (opening and end credits are laid to picture). We recently had a private test screening with an audience made up primarily of visually impaired people – and guide dogs! It worked brilliantly. The feedback from the visually impaired attendees made a powerful case to do more Films for the Ears Event Cinema screenings aka “Dark Screenings”\, in order for those who experience sight loss to enjoy the film collectively and be part of a cinema going community. Dark Soul is a real opportunity for cinemas and festivals to make a bold statement about making cinema more inclusive for specific marginalised groups – like the blind and visually impaired community. Dark Soul is the chance to do it first! \n  \n[Please note\, Refractive have classified this film as a 15. As such\, it is advised that people under 15 should not book a ticket to see this film.] \nFeature length concept film | Refractive classification 15 \nDIRECTOR: Zoë HunterWRITER: Ros BorlandCOUNTRY OF ORIGIN: United Kingdom  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nSynopsis: Edinburgh\, Scotland. A man is shot in a restaurant cold room. Simultaneously\, a young woman\, Donna\, gives birth to a daughter\, Carey. Seven years later\, Donna’s house is burgled and Inspector Carlow attends. This traumatic event encourages an alcoholic\, PTSD-suffering vigilante called Sara to team up with a local social worker to track down the same criminals who have ties to her past. Sara must face her fears and learn to put her trust in people if she has any hope of finding the boy. Featuring Sasha MacPherson (Mortem) and Parmy Singh (River City). \n \nA Note from Gary Hewitt: \n‘The Defender’ started when I lost my mother at the early stages of the covid pandemic. I remembered her last words to me were “Be kind… Help others” This is the underlying message in the story\, but it also questions how far do you take that? This script was developed with the belief that something so personal to me is a clear universal message. While this film is dark with crime and abuse\, it’s about new beginnings\, change\, and how a family is more than blood. The Defender follows Sara Summers’ story\, whose aim to help others\, takes her down a dark path that makes Sara face her own haunted past. I wanted to examine how we deal with loss and abandonment. What will human beings do to relieve themselves of hurt? How will they find the power to break free of their own darkness and start again? \n  \nTHE DEFENDER was selected for:  \nthe EDINBURGH INTERNATION FILM FESTIVAL as part of CELTIC MEDIA SHOWCASE \nIt was one of 6 semi-finalists at this year’s FILM MARKET HUB  \nIt scored 7.5/10 on SCREENCRAFT and was a quarter finalist \nTHE DEFENDER has ranked in the TOP 30% of all 51\,735 projects on COVERFLY  \nIt scored 8/10 on FILM MARKET HUB REVIEW \nAwards: \nBest Indie Film\, Best Actress\, Best Cinematography: Milan Independent Awards \nBest Feature\, Best Producer & Best Cinematography: 8 & HalFilm Awards \nBest Feature Film & Best Actress: Sweden Film Awards \nBest Thriller: Robinson Film Awards (August 2023) \nBest Producer\, Best Director\, Best Feature: White Rose Film Fest  \n
